Nokia targets to have 200 million rural telecom connections by 2012.

The company plans to tap the rural markets, which have a very negligible teledensity of four percent.

The company currently sells its handsets through 1,90,000 outlets. Nokia has made an indepth study of the rural markets and has customised its offerings for the rural population. The company has introduced local language interface, offering nine Indian languages to interact with the rural population. The company has also launched affordable handsets with torch, phone book sharing, dust- resistant keypads and other features. The company also launched the Nokia Life Tools in 2008, which offers education, entertainment and information on agriculture for the rural customers.

challenges faced in the rural regions include poor infrastructure, shortage of electricity, water, illiteracy and a fragmented market amongst others.
