Oct 13, 2009 (The Times of Zambia/All Africa Global Media via COMTEX) -- A GRADE six pupil of Mandenga Basic School in Chirundu has been killed by a crocodile on the lower Zambezi River.
The boy, who has been identified as 16-year-old Leonard Mapulanga, was mauled by the reptile when he went swimming with his friends in the crocodile-infested Zambezi River.
Chirundu ward councillor, Gift Chanda, told ZANIS that the boy sustained fatal injuries from the attack.
Mr Chandasaid the body of the boy was recovered a day after the attack by a businessman who was fishing in the river.
"The remains of the deceased was discovered by a white investor who also found the reptile feasting on the body," he stated.
According to Mr Chanda, the man gathered courage and jumped into the river and grabbed the reptile's head and shouted for help until another man joined the struggle and overpowered the crocodile.
Mr Chanda said the reptile was retrieved from the river together with the boy and taken to ZAWA offices were an official statement was made.
Meanwhile, the ward councillor has observed that more lives would be lost in the area if the population of crocodiles is not controlled.
Mr Chanda said the residents were being forced to walk to the river to bath and draw water for drinking and other domestic use because of poor supply of piped water in the township.
He has since appealed to the Government and the business community to quickly move in and assist with the drilling of boreholes in selected parts of the township.
