Dinosaur safety.(Open Forum)(Brief Article).

As a retired safety officer who was employed in the construction industry for many years, I am dismayed that the same type of accidents are occurring time and time again.

One would think that with all the technological advancement, some improvement could be brought about to reduce the heavy toll of pain and suffering which follows such accidents.

In my view, establishing a bond between the board management, and those working at site, or shop floor level, is the way to create a safety environment. If you can contain the risks and hazards at site level then less time will be spent in the office compiling accident and lost-time statistics--all of which is negative safety.

Some readers may agree with my sentiments and methods of operation. Others may well disagree and say I am old-fashioned or outdated. I was once labelled a safety dinosaur but I did not lose any sleep over it. This is mainly because I was involved in helping to save workers' lives and, in my opinion, there is no greater reward.
